photoblog image Mission

Mission

After so much black and white it may be time for a bit of color.

This is the Santa Barbara Mission, which was founded in 1786 as part of the chain  of  missions extending up the California coast from Mexico. The mission maintains a rose garden, which supplied the foreground interest.

I didn't notice this when I took the shot, but the placement of the bud that lines up with the edge of the tower is a little unfortunate. Unintentional alignments seem to be the theme for this week.

Very nice, Martin. It's beautiful. I'm surprised the background is this blurry with that aperture and focal length.
Martin: Thanks, Ted! You are not taking into account that I had a closeup filter screwed onto the lens that brings the maximum focusing distance down to less than two feet.
The lighting of the rose is particularly appealing.
Lovely shot, Martin, the rose is so crisp and the light highlights it nicely
Good use of natural light here Martin. I Like very much!

Very nice! I've visited this mission several times, and this is a new take on it. I like the contrast between the sharp and soft focus, and the way the color of the rose and the tower tiles match. Looks like it was a beautiful day!
Definitely a likey Martin

I've been to this mission as well, Martin, and am in love with all the missions along CA's coast. This foreground rose (AND BUD) has a symbolism, I'm quite sure, that could make for a nice sermonette here. Very lovely.

That rose stands out so strong against the background - it pops. Excellen picture. That mission building looks familiar - must have been in a movie.

Excellent Martin. Puts me in mind of the early work of Gregory Crewdson and some of David Lynch's films. A slightly surreal sickliness. A likey! Mike
Wonderful perspective and light!. Your photos make me itch to travel and see these places first hand!

Stunning image, Martin. The rose is exquisite - the way it stands out against the blurry background.

One of the BEST photos i've seen using the DoF so wonderfully as a soft background. Breath-taking wink

That's the approach I really like. I use it often by myself.
Two plans in a composition and both are worth looking at. I only wish the rose was turned toward the building to frame the shot.
i tried exactly this today ...nowehere near as good as this though but gives me hope. Truly great shot

This is lovely, Martin. I like the light. And I espcially love the peach of the rose and the building's cupolas that echo each other.
Wow - Fine art again !!
