photoblog image Street Lights

Street Lights

A street lamp in Germany.

Editing Notes
USM, brushwork to lighten the light bulb and darken the cable, multiplicative level (who would have though it!) with lightened shadows. Adjustment layers: levels for each color channel separately to achieve the desired tonal range later, custom gradient map (Click on the gradient display in the dialog where you select which gradient to use. You can modify gradients here. In this case I clicked on the white adjuster on the lower right corner of the gradient and then moved the midpoint adjuster. This allows you to compress or expand the tonal range in each half. Play with it and you will see what I mean.)  Photo filter set to the sepia color rather than an actual filter, brightness/contrast to lighten the image.

That is so cool, Martin. I especially like the light sprinkles on the top of the globe.

After all my time in Germany, I don't ever recall seeing such a fascinating street light!

The Germans have cool streetside hair dryers smile

Punk style street light tongue

Doesn't matter - an excellent picture. I will try the custom gradient thing at some time. The standard gradients I fail to find a use for.
So many objects are ruined by the anti-bird spikes, but in this case it looks like a head with spikey hair which makes it quite fun. The effect the glass casing has on the sky is interesting. I wonder if the sky could have been defined even stronger?
Martin: Thanks for the comment, Chad! I couldn't get the sky to be more dramatic without losing the tonal range of the tubing. It is not easy to process it separately because some of it is visible through the glass. I am sure there is a way to punch it up without spending an eternity, I just don't know it. If anyone has ideas, I am all ears smile
Love this shot, what a great light. Thankyou for your monitor advice, I will check it out.
Nice shot, looks like something from out of space.
I wouldn't want to be a bird landing on that! Interesting B&W Shot!
This looks quite futuristic Martin...great shot and processing...and honestly, can't thank you enough.
I love the colour conversion you've done here Martin. I'm seeing some brilliant b/w shots on sc today. Interesting subject too.
WOW!!! Awesome!! So... where can i download this talent of yours?? hehe.

Seriously awesome photo
That is the most unusual street lamp I have ever seen. It is most interesting to know your pp technique. Thanks.

Now I'm jealous - I recently took an interesting steet lamp but this shot blows me out of the water. The bird spikes look terrifying! Excellent shot. Mike

I saw this pic, Martin, and thought I left a comment, but I see that I didn't. So I'll leave one now.

I like the b&w processing you did to get this effect. The layers of tone really fit the background. Nice.
I like this very much Martin !! Ordinary object becomes aliens invaders smile
