Mooney Fall, Havasupai
I hope you won't mind too much if I keep going with the vacation shots for another couple of days.
This is the Mooney Fall (~200ft) in the Havasupai Reservation, about half way down into the Grand Canyon. It is named after a prospector, who fell to his death when his rope was cut while descending near the fall. Today the descent starts from where I took this picture. Some of it goes through tunnels hacked into the rock. The rest is a scramble along the face of the cliff using chains and footholds cut into the rock. The colors are pretty realistic. The water runs over lime deposits farther upstream, which gives it its blue green color, and the rock is bright red as you see it here.

Gosh, wow! The rocks look as if they've been poured out, and have set half way down. What a truly amazing sight this is, and the colours too - vibrant!
Do you have any idea how these shapes were created?
Martin: Ellie, the water contains a lot of dissolved lime stone, which gives it this greenish color. All along the river there are terraces where limestone deposits have accumulated. The flowing shapes around the waterfall grow the same way. Water deposits limestone until there is enough of it to divert the flow. Up close you can see that there are new fans growing under the waterfall where water drips down slowly. It really is a wild place
It may be realistic, but I dunno - for once I'm just not crazy about your colors, Martin.
Beautiful composition Martin. Terrific colours contrast! I like it.
Wow the colour of the rock is wonderful, good photo
Keep them coming!! I think the colours are spot on. The trees give the scale.
'tis beautiful to behold, Martin.
Keep going with these vacation snaps as long as you like...it is entertaining, and I learn stuff every day.
Wow! Stunning!
Fantastic colours - it looks like an amazing place. Not sure I would want to scramble along the cliff face though - there are limits to what I will do for a photograph!
Ingrid
The color is stunning.
Those are PEI colours. They sure look familiar to me.
Wow...that's a stunning view. The rock formations are very interesting
I will just get my dive gear on Martin it looks so inviting
Outstanding shot
Beautiful! This place must be an oasis! Truly a magnificent image.
I don't mind you showing beautiful places like this. I like the cliff walls that look as if the mud did a run.
Oh I love this Martin. Gotta be a likey
What a place. I like seeing the trees for perspective. Great textures, colors, and sense of place.
love the way the rock has that melted look....great colors, this must have been a fabulous place to visit.
Keep them coming, Martin. Phenomenal geology and colour.
Keep going, as I have never been! The colour of the rock is amazing and a stunning contrast with the pool.
I guess the hard part is sharing the view with everyone else, or did you get a few moments to yourself to let the slendour sink in? ;o)
Martin: Mike, this is about 13 miles from the nearest road (which is about 65 miles from the nearest highway). That really cuts down on the number of other tourists. Once we descended to the river, we really didn't see anyone until we got to the Colorado, another 7 miles downstream. Thanks for the comment!
Brilliant colouful image!
It looks very tempting for a swim down there.
The colors are amazing and the structure of the rock are fascinating. A very good and interesting picture, Martin! /Jonas
great scene Martin, that blue set against the vivid rock red is cool. mal
Whats not to like
Man, I really, REALLY need to travel more. This is beautiful.
Breath taking!
A vivid shot which is simply incredible. The 'melting' look of the rock is wonderful |
