Driving by Downtown Dallas a few weekends ago I decided to stop for a few snaps. I don't know the name of this building, but its courtyard seems to be a somewhat popular place for people to hang out on a Sunday afternoon, probably to admire all the triangles.

There is a small crumbling courthouse downtown that I surrounded on all sides by newer and uglier courthouses. It looks like the old one is undergoing some level of renovation, which is probably a good thing, except from the perspective of this weed. I think I am going to post Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the time being.

Another one from Antelope Canyon. The colors really are this wild. It is well worth a visit if you are near Lake Powell. If there is a geologist among you, I'd like to know how these crazy shapes formed. Normally sandstone doesn't seem to do this. Have a good weekend!

On my way back to Houston last weekend I drove past Downtown Dallas. They seem to have a thing for blue glass skyscrapers up there, and I had neither the desire nor the fortitude to resist snapping a few pictures.

I don't have anything especially special to post today for #500, but this is a good time to once again thank all of you for making SC such a wonderful and instructive place. I appreciate the countless visits, comments, suggestions, and above all the camaraderie. Nevertheless, over the last few months I have become somewhat dissatisfied with the routine of posting a new picture daily. In some cases I posted a picture just to fill the slot, not because I thought it should really be published. In addition, onexposure.net has taken some of my better pictures, which reduced the average quality of what I posted here even more. Consequently I will start posting fewer pictures at longer intervals. Hopefully that will translate into better overall quality. I will be around to check your blogs on a regularly basis. Thanks again for bearing with me for 500 posts and for all the help and encouragement!

This gives you a pretty good idea what the hike from Mooney Fall to the Colorado looks like. The guy in the red shirt is Jesse, who somehow convinced himself that going on this trip with me was a good idea. We crossed the river about a dozen times on the way down to the Colorado and back. Because I knew to expect this from a previous trip, we did the whole 14 mile round trip in sandals. Sandal technology clearly has come a long way judging by the pristine state of our feet at the end of the day. I am out from today until Monday. Have a great weekend!

I hope you won't mind too much if I keep going with the vacation shots for another couple of days. This is the Mooney Fall (~200ft) in the Havasupai Reservation, about half way down into the Grand Canyon. It is named after a prospector, who fell to his death when his rope was cut while descending near the fall. Today the descent starts from where I took this picture. Some of it goes through tunnels hacked into the rock. The rest is a scramble along the face of the cliff using chains and footholds cut into the rock. The colors are pretty realistic. The water runs over lime deposits farther upstream, which gives it its blue green color, and the rock is bright red as you see it here.

Back to normal as promised. Thank you very much for the feedback yesterday. It is very helpful to see the range of responses. I will definitely keep playing with this approach to see what it evolves to. Here is the obligatory Antelope Canyon shot. It is right next to the power plant from last week and you can't really see the canyon until you are a few feet away from the entrance. If you go, allow for a lot of time. The place is crawling with photographers and getting a clean shot is not easy.

Since so many of you graciously provided feedback on the last experiment I posted, I decided to run another one by you today. Obviously this is a bit of a departure from what I usually post, but it is good to break out of the normal routine every once in a while. Tomorrow will be back to the usual fare. This is my first attempt to use various textures in Photoshop. Skilled practitioners of this dark art can achieve truly astonishing results. I am offering this for your critique as a beginner's first step. What do you think? Do the textures enhance the shot or detract from it? Is it tacky or nice? Should I have used different textures? Any and all feedback is most welcome, especially the honest kind. It won't hurt my feelings if you tell me this is an image only the person who took it could love :) Thank you in advance!
